For
Deloss Webber it begins with a connection to stone. His sculptural works are
immediate reminders of the beauty that is inherent in the world. Varying in all
sizes and types, Webber collects rocks onto which he intricately wraps patterns
of fiber. He chooses each stone for its individuality in color, texture and
mark. He then adds to its character through manipulating the rock, and enhances
it further through his weavings of various cane, bamboo or reed. The fiber fits
so seamlessly onto the body of the stone, it seems to have always been there.
Webber first learned rattan weaving from his mother while growing up in Northern
Africa
and Spain. His ongoing interest in Japanese basketry and a deep connection to
his environment have taken Webber’s work to many new and exciting places. Each
treated stone wraps the viewer in like a piece of his fiber, closely connecting
them to Webber’s clear veneration for nature. In addition to his works in fiber
and stone, Webber has more recently explored other aspects of sculpture by
working with wood and glass.
