Weaving together landscapes, patterns, symbols and text, Cheryl
Warrick’s paintings are rich in the expression of seeking out the secrets
inherent in the journey of becoming wise. Warrick works with a variety of media
from acrylics to tar and graphite. The array of media is highlighted by the way
in which she layers symbols, icons and proverbs which are often rendered with a
simplistic naivety. Warrick’s surfaces suggest time and history and her
proverbs are a way to carry on the tradition of oral story telling and language.
The imagined landscapes in Warrick’s paintings are typically rather dramatic and
focus on the ever-changing aspects of the earth, evoking both an internal
awareness and a collective idea of ground and sky. Warrick knits all of these
different elements together, intentionally juxtaposing them to create
associations and dialogues, asking the viewer to discover relationships and form
their own questions about what wisdom means.
“As best I can tell, wisdom is an accumulation of bits and
pieces, both experience and words. In my paintings these visual elements are
weaved together like patchwork quilts.”
