The Fire at Day's End

Though small
in scale, Greg Skol’s intensely detailed landscapes are packed with visual
information. Skol begins by looking at a specific place and then returns to his
studio to paint from memory where he often adds elements not present at the
original site; a waterfall, a slant of sunlight or an unexpected stream might
all be added to the composition. With a slight edge of fantasy, his pieces
suggest a perfection of nature that while perhaps unattainable, connects the
viewer with the natural world. The depth he is able to achieve in the small
dimensions that he works coupled with the incredible detail of his scenes are
all highly skilled. This exquisite attention to detail, along side a strong
sense of composition and color, create works that although feel familiar are
really of another world.
“It is not
transcription of place that my work is concerned with, it is evocation of place.
It is in this way that the landscape becomes a visual representation of our
internal world.” -Greg Skol
