Able
to imbue each sculpture with a life all its own, Marlene Rose works with the
gritty and labor intensive process of hand cast glass. Inspired by her extensive
world travels, Marlene’s work often uses ancient and archetypal symbols. This
visual vocabulary is paired nicely with the process itself of casting an object.
Within the glass there is the memory of the forms used to initially shape the
sculpture. Distinctive to Rose’s work, the artist also uses found objects, which
she either imbeds within the glass or uses as part of the pedestal device. Using
these contemporary found objects alongside her language of symbols allows for
modern and ancient forms to meet and become one. Combining a fine sense of color
and surface with the unique transparency of glass, Rose gives her sculptures a
fantastically illuminated and vibrant quality.
“They
are kept moments, shards of what I have seen, unnamed emotions, visions,
concepts, memories. They call back; and they are the vehicle on which a viewers’
vision can ride away. The glass is there only to see through.”- Marlene Rose
