Known for his interpretations of California’s many varied landscapes, Rick Monzon’s work transports the viewer from the literal, into a dreamy place that hints at an unattainable utopia. Early in his career, Monzon worked more directly from specific suburban scenes, and as his paintings progressed, he moved away from a photo-realistic rendering and began to introduce his trademark whirl. His paintings have a slight haziness to them, a whoosh that enhances their dream-like quality. His paintings, while not dimensionally panoramic, pull the viewer in and give the impression of looking through a wide-angle camera lens. The expansiveness of Monzon’s scenes contributes to the illusion that the work is much larger than what is hanging on the wall.
