Known for his interpretations of California’s many varied landscapes, Rick
Monzon’s work transports the viewer from the literal, into a dreamy place that
hints at an unattainable utopia. Early in his career, Monzon worked more
directly from specific suburban scenes, and as his paintings progressed, he
moved away from a photo-realistic rendering and began to introduce his trademark
whirl. His paintings have a slight haziness to them, a whoosh that enhances
their dream-like quality. His paintings, while not dimensionally panoramic, pull
the viewer in and give the impression of looking through a wide-angle camera
lens. The expansiveness of Monzon’s scenes contributes to the illusion that the
work is much larger than what is hanging on the wall. Rather than bring the
viewer to a precise site, Monzon’s work evokes a serene, wistful mood, allowing
the viewer to create their own meaning.e abstract quality of realism as
opposed the photographic copying of nature.
