Working
in steel, David Gignac creates industrial sculptures that bridge the gap between
the mysterious and the familiar. Gignac transforms common objects and forms
through forging and fabricating steel and frequently the works will also
incorporate cast glass or recycled products. Although most works are
recognizable representations, the artist at times alters the materials so
completely that they begin to reference the deep history of ancient forms.
Starting from a young age, Gignac has been influenced by Magritte and other
surrealists. Of particular interest to Gignac was Magritte’s concept that
inanimate objects may have a life of their own that we know nothing about; a
fascinating concept to think of when looking at Gignac’s own work. This sense of
mystery is infused in all of Gignac’s powerful sculptural forms.
