Michael Downs greatest
satisfaction comes from portraying simple things from everyday life. Light is
the most crucial factor in the rendering of his paintings, as it can change the
most ordinary and sometimes unnoticed subjects into the extraordinary. Painting
primarily in oil, Downs achieves a sense of immediacy and spontaneity by
painting his compositions in what he refers to as a wet on wet process, thus
stating less with more. Downs' love of painting encompasses the entire
creative process, from choosing supports through to the final varnishing and
framing; and finally after hanging a finished painting in his studio for several
weeks - "letting it go".
